We Love Wichita!

Whether you’ve lived in Wichita, or have come for a visit, our city has a way of nestling into the hearts of those who come here. Maybe it’s all the local, rockstar businesses, or all the cultural and fun events we have going on, or maybe it’s just how friendly our people are.

Whatever you love about Wichita, we’re here to help you celebrate it with our exclusive design Wichita products. We’ve created T-shirts, glass ware, postcards, patches, pins, mugs and other fun items. We also carry work by other local artisans, who create Wichita jewelry, Wichita flag artwork, neighborhood candles, stickers, buttons and more! If you’re looking for a way to show your Wichita pride, or are looking for a gift for Wichitans here, there and everywhere, you’ve got to come in and check out items you can’t get anywhere else!

Wichita Flag
One of the symbols of Wichita we love is the official flag of the City of Wichita! It’s red, white and blue and has been the symbol of Wichita for over 80 years.

Three red and three white rays alternate from an off-center blue sun. The rays are the path of freedom to come and go as one pleases. The blue disc represents happiness, contentment. The white circle, stitched into the blue sun, with four sets of three parallel rays emanating from the circle’s principal axis represents the Indian symbol for “hogan,” meaning permanent home.

Looking for a symbol to represent pride in our community, the American Legion ran a city flag design contest in 1937, with cash prizes provided by the Wichita Rotary Club. Over 100 entries were submitted, and judged by a panel of three artists. Mural artist Cecil McAlister, with a design based on Indian symbolism, was named the winner, and received a cash prize of $40. It was accepted by proclamation on June 14, 1937, Flag Day.

The winning design was a complex sewing challenge for west-side seamstress Mary J. Harper. Wichita's Betsy Ross, as she was then styled, spent an entire day piecing together the design of Indian emblems from red, white and blue silk. She made a total of six flags originally.

The first one flew from the City Hall flagstaff at 204 S. Main on July 23, 1937. None of the originals are known to survive, but their descendants fly outside Century II and City Hall everyday.

Besides being flown at municipal buildings, the popular banner has recently become a symbol of the community’s resurgence of pride, and can be seen in many murals around town. It’s a tangible reminder of our connection to each other and to our home.

We Love our Besties!

We love our Besties! In fact, we love them so much we helped put on a fashion extravaganza, “Besties: Fashion for a Purpose,” to honor them and raise money for the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center. (WASAC)

On Saturday, October 7, Lucinda’s, along with the Finishing School for Modern Women and Charisma – Inner Beauty, arranged a fun evening to celebrate the influence of our “besties,” raising $1,700 for the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center through admission and raffle ticket sales for prizes from local businesses. We hosted the wine and dessert after party, and donated 20 percent of sales that evening to our cause.

The event, held in the Atrium of Hotel at Old Town, featured our fabulous fall frocks and jewelry, crowned by gorgeous hairstyles and makeup by Charisma – Inner Beauty. We recruited pairs of real life best friends to walk down the runway together, showing off their new looks, while Jill D. Miller, the Headmistress of the Finishing School for Modern Women shared stories with the audience of our besties adventures together.

We’re passionate about supporting our community, especially nonprofits whose purpose it is to help women. WASAC’s mission is to educate and provide resources to individuals and the community to “create a culture of intolerance for sexual violence and an atmosphere of healing for those impacted by it.” They support a 24/7 crisis call line, give legal and medical help, support counseling, individual therapy and much more, all on a shoe-string budget.

“What a great, fun way to raise money for women in need,” says Kathy Williams, Executive Director of WASAC. “These funds will help us fill in the areas that the grants we’ve received don’t. This will allow us to pay for supplies for support and unexpected needs of survivors in Wichita.”

A big thank you to our other sponsors, the Finishing School for Modern Women, Charisma - Inner Beauty and Hotel at Old Town. Three cheers for our modeling besties, who worked the catwalk with attitude and style. We appreciate the local businesses that donated raffle prized for the event: Skin Essentials, Intuitive Readings by Jennifer Jean, Sedgwick County Historical Museum, The Finishing School for Modern Women, WASAC, Bella Luz, Hana Café, Todd Brian's Brickstreet Cafe and Tavern and Pure. Of course, we couldn’t have done it without the hard work of our staff. Special kudos to our Shannon, the director of our show, whose organization and leadership skills kept everything running perfectly.

Finally, thanks to everyone who came out and supported our event. We can’t wait to do it again next year!

Your Style Consultants!

Your Style Consultants

Are you in need of a wardrobe lift? Too busy to put together outfits? Not sure which styles look best on you? Or maybe you’re just looking for some fashiony fun?

No matter what your motivation to spice up your wardrobe, we’ve got you covered! Lucinda's has launched an exciting new service- fashion consultations.

The inspiration to offer this service came from watching our Sales Manager, Shannon, fit models for the Besties fundraising fashion show. She has such a knack for pinpointing everyone's style, and making them look and feel their best!  We had so much fun with the fashion shows, we want to extend this service to others.

Shannon has a great eye for style. Her love of fashion and theater background, working in the costume shop and making costumes for shows, has given her a unique perspective into style consultations.

“It’s fun to be female,” says Shannon. “I love fashion as a form of art, as a form of self-expression, setting ourselves apart from everyone else.”

Shannon is having a blast working with women and hearing their stories. Her favorite one so far, came from a woman who has just lost a lot of weight, but wasn’t able to accept the difference in the mirror yet. She loves spending quality time with our customers, being able to give her undivided attention from some fun, stress-free, dress up time. She encourages women to experiment, and try something on they wouldn’t have tried on their own.

“It is so much fun seeing how a new outfit, can change attitudes and how we feel about ourselves,” says Shannon. “Unlike changing your look with a new haircut or color, trying on new styles is a risk-free, temporary change.

How it works

Shannon will schedule a 15-minute phone conversation with you to get more information about what you’re looking for, whether it’s a special event or just for fun. She also asks for other information, such as the sizes you wear, to help her prepare for your consultation. She has helped people put together new outfits, accessorize or complete a look they already have in their closet.

When you come in for your one-hour consultation, Shannon will have a few outfits ready for you to look at, to make sure you both like the direction Shannon suggests. Then it’s playtime, trying on new outfits to see what looks the best on you and fits your style, complete with jewelry and shoes.

Our style consultations are $50, and you get $40 of that back in a gift certificate that you can spend the same day as your consultation.

To get started, make an appointment for an exclusive style consultation by emailing Shannon at lucindasict@gmail or give her a call at 316-264-1080. She’s in Tuesday through Saturday.

Friendsgiving is a growing trend for those who live too far away from their homes to go back for the Thursday feast or just in addition to Thanksgiving where friends come together and drink and eat pie. Since Thanksgiving is a holiday to be thankful, Friendsgiving is to gather up your closest friends and just have a good time together. In the hustle and bustle of life getting all your friends together can be difficult and doesn't happen as much as you would like so this is the perfect excuse to hang out.

A good menu for Friendsgiving usually consists of the non typical Thanksgiving meal. I generally have three or four family Thanksgivings to attend so by the time Friendsgiving comes around I am SO tired of turkey, potatoes, and cooked veggies. Good ideas for some Friendsgiving menus are multicultural meals such as Chinese themed, Latin themed, or Italian themed foods. Or do something off the wall and have ballpark themed food. (Yes, I said ballpark themed.) My friends and I decided to go wacky and creative with the ball park theme. You can go all out with the decorations for this theme too to make it extra memorable. Here is the menu for this year:

~beef hot dogs
~full service nacho bar
~potato wedges
